The CDE as an ecosystem: software, common data environments and artificial intelligence

A common data environment is not a single program. On a project, different CDE platforms coexist with modelling and drafting software, bills of quantities, spreadsheets, certified email and site data: the CDE is the ecosystem that holds them together with rules, workflows and responsibilities. Today artificial intelligence is entering this ecosystem and changing the way information is read, checked and shared.

The course teaches how to design and govern this ecosystem, so that project decisions grow out of specialist knowledge and become common knowledge.

Who it is for

Designers and engineering firms

To deliver drawings and models that are tidy, properly coded and consistent, and to respond to review comments without wasting time.

BIM coordinators and BIM managers

To govern the rules, workflows and checks of an ecosystem of software and data environments, including with AI.

Contracting authorities and verification bodies

To receive, review and archive deliveries in a traceable way, from the exchange information requirements to approval.

Construction companies

To manage site, supplier and installer documentation together with the design documentation.

Module 01

The CDE as an ecosystem

From the single platform to the ecosystem: the difference between CDE (the process) and the CDE platform (ACDat) under UNI 11337 and ISO 19650, a map of the software and environments used on the project, the data they produce and who is responsible for it.

Module 02

Interoperability between environments

Making different CDE platforms and software talk to each other — Autodesk Construction Cloud, Trimble Connect, modelling and analysis programs — with open formats (IFC, BCF), metadata, versions and traceability of every step.

Module 03

Artificial intelligence in the CDE

What AI can do today with project data: read and classify documents and title blocks, check naming codes, search and summarise information across drawings, reports and bills of quantities, assist the team during reviews. Limits, typical errors and the professional’s own check.

Module 04

Governance, data and responsibility

Roles and permissions, confidentiality of the data used by AI, where information is stored, European rules on data and artificial intelligence. How to include the use of AI in the exchange information requirements and in the BIM execution plan.

Module 05

Workshop on a real project

A complete workflow, from delivery of the drawings to shared review and archiving with a digital fingerprint, with guided exercises on your team’s own tools.

Formats

  • Two-hour webinars on a single module, open to professionals and technical staff.
  • Full in-company course, on site or online, built around your team’s ecosystem of software and CDE platforms.
  • Coaching on a real project: we set up rules and workflows together and test them on the first delivery.

Continuing professional development credits

We are organising events accredited with the Italian professional associations (Ordini). When an event awards CPD credits we will say so here, with the accrediting body and the number of credits. Leave your details in the form to receive the calendar.

A new way of training

Digital Verification Academy: from the plan to the real session

The Digital Verification Academy is the Nexcommon platform for in-company training programmes. The slides are not a closed package: they start from a plan, as in the predictive method, and grow during the session with the team’s questions and tools, as in the Agile method. What remains at the end is the course that was actually needed.

A practical example: the session on the common data environment

Before

The trainer prepares the slides for the session: this is the plan, as in a traditional course. Example: 7 slides on “A CDE platform, an archive and a shared folder are not the same thing”.

During

Participants follow the slides on their own computers and write questions. An inspector asks which revision counts if the drawing is at Rev. B on SharePoint and at Rev. C on Trimble Connect: with one click the question becomes a slide. The trainer opens the version history in Trimble Connect: the tool shown is recorded. Slides are moved, edited, skipped.

After

The trainer hands out the evolutionary growth slides: the version created in the room, with the comparison between the plan and the real session. AI helps to reorganise questions, tools and notes. Every participant finds them in their learning card.

What the platform includes

Initial assessment

Each person self-assesses on 15 areas; everyone’s starting point becomes a digital maturity index for the team.

Weekly programme

One session a week: learning card, demonstration on a real case, exercise, quiz and a micro-task to carry out on the project.

Levels by role

Four levels, with different objectives for those who inspect, those who coordinate and those who lead the process.

Reverse mentoring

The senior brings experience and technical judgement, the junior brings tools and data: they train each other, in pairs.

Knowledge Base

An experienced engineer’s account becomes a shared knowledge card: one person’s knowledge becomes everyone’s.

Measured growth

Attendance, quizzes, exercises and project activities show how the team grows, week after week.
